With around 80 percent of all Americans experiencing back pain at some point in their lives, low back pain has become an increasingly recognized health problem. As one of the most common reasons for individuals to visit their physician, back problems are among the most expensive health conditions treated in America. In a 2010 study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, researchers examined the cost differences between chiropractic and medical treatments for low back pain. In the study, patients were able to choose between treatment from a chiropractor or a medical doctor, with the same access to insurance for both care provider types.
By completing a claims analysis of past records from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee’s fully insured population, researchers were able to look at treatments for low back pain that were reimbursed by patients’ insurance. After comparing risk-adjusted costs and paid claims between each treatment by both medical doctors and chiropractors, researchers identified a noticeable cost difference. When compared to low back pain treatment provided by a medical doctor, chiropractic care cost 40 percent less. With this large disparity, the study suggests that chiropractic care provides more cost-efficient treatment for low back pain than medical care does.
